DESCRIPTION
Napa Valley College is seeking two Athletic Trainers (full-time and part-time) for the Kinesiology, Athletics & Dance Division.  One of the primary functions of the Kinesiology, Athletics & Dance Division is to support the Athletics program and maintain compliance with CCCAA requirements.  The incumbents in this position will implement the athletic training program, develop fitness programs and strength training sessions, assist with supervision of students during all aspects of their participation in sport activities, evaluate medical conditions of student athletes, oversee and schedule services and support and orient student athletes and coaches regarding potential health risks and injury preventing strategies.  The position reports to the Associate Dean, Kinesiology, Athletics & Dance.

Two classified positions are available:

  • One position is full-time at 40 hours per week, 11-months-per-year. The starting salary range is $4,478/month to $5,184/month, with future steps up to $6,301/month.
  • One position is part-time at 24 hours per week, 11-months-per-year. The starting salary range is $2,686.80/month to $3,110.40/month, with future steps up to $3,780.60/month.

The salary will be at the appropriate placement on range 22 of the current Classified Salary Schedule.  Placement is made based on experience.  The college offers a fringe benefit package including medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance, employee assistance program, and public employee retirement system membership.  The district benefit allotment is prorated for less-than-full-time and less-than-twelve-month employees.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Administers first aid and treatment to student athletes for the purpose of meeting their immediate medical and health care needs for those participating in the athletic program.
  • Assesses new equipment and treatment methods (e.g. therapeutic devices, etc.) for the purpose of minimizing frequency of injuries and duration of time prior to medical clearance for sports participation.
  • Attends a variety of meetings, workshops, conferences, etc. for the purpose of ensuring updates and compliance information is shared with students and staff.
  • Communicates with physicians, coaches, and athletes for the purpose of disseminating the athlete’s status for participation in athletics.
  • Consults with physicians and other medical personnel (e.g. referrals, physical exams, monitoring individual rehabilitation plans, etc.) for the purpose of determining and monitoring the appropriate course of treatment for injured athletes.
  • Evaluates conditions contributing to athletic injury (e.g. preexisting physical conditions, facility and playing field hazards, inadequate equipment, injury trends, etc.) for the purpose of making modifications and recommendations that could reduce the risk of injuries.
  • Evaluates medical condition of student athletes for the purpose of recommending precautions and treatment for individual students, referring to appropriate medical personnel and facilities as needed; providing clearance to participate in activities.
  • Maintains treatment area and related equipment during athletic events (e.g. splints, pads, protective devices, sanitation, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring ability to respond to injuries and equipment needs and meet regulatory and safety guidelines.
  • Maintains athletic injury, treatment and health records (e.g. physicals, emergency information, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring accurate and thorough recordkeeping in compliance with all legal and college requirements.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies (e.g. ordering, receiving, stocking, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of all sports medicine modalities and supplies for use during preseason, regular season and post season.
  • Orients coaches, student athletes regarding potential health risks of participation in athletics for the purpose of implementation of preventive strategies.
  • Prepares purchase orders and requests for payment (e.g. take inventory, contact vendor, physician, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring adequate medication, medical equipment and supplies are available and meet regulatory guidelines.
  • Prepares players for practices and competition (e.g. bandaging, conditioning and rehabilitation activities, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring proper exercises and warm-ups meet state and regulatory compliance.
  • Processes a variety of lists, records and documents relating to injuries while maintaining the confidentiality of sensitive information (e.g. accident/injury reports, records of treatment, etc.) for the purpose of documenting information in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Provides game services in pre-practice, practice, post-practice, and non-traditional seasons game services (e.g. treatment and care, training, determination of athlete playing status, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring response time is adequate to meet acceptable standards of care.
  • Responds to injuries, illness and medical emergencies of athletes and staff in attendance at athletic events (e.g. determine level of treatment, etc.) for the purpose of evaluating the situation and taking an appropriate course of action.
  • Schedules hours of athletic training room operation, staff coverage of athletic activities and assigned responsibilities for the purpose of ensuring availability of required coverage for all practices and games.
  • Supervises student workers (e.g. train, provide orientation on equipment and training rooms and department protocols, etc.) for the purpose of evaluating performance and ensuring guidelines and regulatory requirements are maintained.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the department.

Independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires analysis based on organizational objectives; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with persons of varied educational and cultural backgrounds; communicating empathetically with injured student athletes; dealing with frequent interruptions; exhibiting strong leadership; maintaining confidentiality; meeting deadlines and schedules; providing a firm, fair, and consistent occupational discipline approach; setting priorities; traveling to off campus athletic events; and working extended hours that may include evenings and/or weekends.

Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working independently under broad organizational guidelines to achieve unit objectives; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; tracking budget expenditures. Utilization of resources from other work units is often required to perform the job’s functions. There is some opportunity to significantly impact the organization’s services.

Work Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 20% sitting, 40% walking, and 40% standing.  The job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.  Job requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Experience:          Job related experience within a specialized field.

Education:            Master’s degree in job-related area.

Equivalency:         Eight (8) years of experience working as a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) by the NATABOC.

Certificates and Licenses:

  • Athletic Trainer certification by the National Athletic
  • Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC)
  • CPR/AED/First Aid Certificate
  • Valid CA Driver’s License & Evidence of Insurability

Continuing Education/Training:

  • Maintains Certificates and/or Licenses

Clearances:

  • Criminal Background Clearance
  • Tuberculosis Clearance
  • Physical Capacities Test Clearance
