3CATA Athletic Trainer of the Year 2024
Brandon Johnson
For the last 25 years, Brandon Johnson has served the athletic department at Sierra College in the role of certified athletic trainer. Before his tenure at Sierra College, he worked for two years at Maryvale High School in Phoenix Arizona, and one year at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, New York.
Throughout Brandon’s career, his dedication and commitment to the health and safety of thousands of student-athletes and his service to the profession of athletic training, is astounding. As an active member in the California Community College Athletic Training Association, Brandon served as president for 3 years and was challenged in that role by leading the association through the Covid pandemic. Amongst his many accomplishments during his presidency, Brandon chaired the 3CATA COVID working group, was a member of the 3C2A COVID working group, he implemented new sub-committees into the 3CATA, and assisted with writing legislation to update the medical guidelines in the 3C2A constitution and updated the 3CATA constitution. Prior to his role in the 3CATA presidency, he served as North vice president for 6 years and a Big 8 conference representative in the years preceding.
Brandon’s greatest joy professionally has been working with community college studentathletes. Being able to mentor and assist student-athletes in their journey at Sierra College, either to the next level athletically or academically, is where his passion lies. Brandon finds his greatest fulfillment working at the community college level.
In addition to his work with Sierra College student-athletes, Brandon also helps develop the next generation of athletic trainers by supervising student volunteers at Sierra College and serves as a preceptor for graduate students in their clinical rotations in the athletic training program at Sacramento State. In his free time Brandon enjoys spending time with his wife Shabby, mountain biking, traveling, golfing, and taking photos.
